This black and white photo series is a documentation of surfing through the early hours or late afternoons.
About 10% of surfers in America are women. The representation of women in surf magazines is always more about the sex appeal and less about the actual talent and physical endurance that women are more than capable of.
Ellery Carbone is born and raised in Northern California. Before her move to Southern California for University, she started surfing and embracing the lifestyle of the sport. With accessibility of having a beach nearby, surfing became a part of her everyday college life.
For Carbone, surfing is an outlet that lets her escape from the rest of the world. Being in the water is her way of connecting to something bigger than herself. She favors no specific weather conditions; to her, surfing is an act of recognizing her true self. An act of self love, between the a.m. and p.m.
